Power Rewards: Water Heater

Reduce Energy Use and Earn Bill Credits

Power Rewards: Water Heater pays you to reduce your energy use when energy demand is high. I&M will automatically adjust your water heater during these peak times, and you can earn bill credits.

Shifting energy use away from high-demand periods allows us to rely on more renewable sources of energy during peak times. This helps keep prices more affordable for you and your community, plus it helps the environment by reducing our carbon footprint.

Get Bill Credits this Summer

When energy use is high, on hot and humid days, I&M will hold a Peak Energy Event. You can select from three different participation levels and earn up to $1.10 per event.* With up to 15 events per summer, the savings can add up! And you probably won’t even notice an event is taking place.

Your water heater is designed to store hot water for many hours between uses. During the typical 2-3 hour event, additional water will not be heated to conserve energy. Typically, 99% of customers never run out of hot water even though it’s not being actively heated. You’ll still have hot water when you need it. You can opt out of an event, at any time and for any reason.

It’s Easy! Here’s How It Works

Get Connected

We’ll install a small device on your water heater—for no charge.

Prior to an event, we will post a “Peak Energy Event” alert on our website letting you know when the event will start and stop.

Reduce Energy Use

During an event, we will send a signal to your water heater to not heat additional water. This conserves energy and reduces high demand on the energy grid. Typically, 99% of customers don’t run out of hot water during an event.

When the event is over, the device will signal your water heater to return the temperature to your normal setting.

Earn Bill Credits

You earn up to a $1.10 bill credit per event.
