Future Forward: The Road to Net Zero

AEP’s commitment for a clean energy future is accelerating with our new Future Forward strategy. Under our proposed plan, which must be approved by regulators, AEP would add nearly 16,600 MW of new, clean wind and solar generation to our regulated fleet by 2030.

We will do it by building upon our long history of industry leadership in central power generation and 765-kV transmission innovation. In less than a decade from now, our plan would shift 51% of our total capacity to renewables. These investments will transform the electric system while ensuring its reliability, affordability and resilience.

I&M’s Commitment to Saving

Indiana Michigan Power Logo

Environmental responsibility is fundamentally important to Indiana Michigan Power. Here are a few ways we work hard to protect the environment while delivering safe, reliable service:

  • More than two-thirds of the energy I&M generates is from emission-free sources that include solar, wind, hydro and the Cook Nuclear Plant.
  • We own and operate four emission-free solar plants. A fifth plant now being built near South Bend will bring our solar generation up to 35 megawatts, enough energy to power 4,700 typical homes.
  • We purchase 450 megawatts of wind energy – enough to power more than 100,000 homes – from three Hoosier wind generation plants.
  • Our generation fleet also includes six hydroelectric sites along the St. Joseph River in Michiana which generates over 22.4 megawatts of hydro energy.
  • Our Cook Nuclear Plant generates enough emission-free energy to power more than 1.5 million homes.
  • We continue to add technology to reduce emissions at the Rockport Generation Plant, I&M’s lone coal-fueled plant.
  • Our vigorous energy efficiency programs help reduce customers’ energy use – thereby reducing demand for generation of electricity.

Balanced Energy Mix

Our capcity is more than 50% emission-free, and actual energy delivered in 2019 was more than two-thirds emission-free.

I&M’s Energy Efficiency Programs

I&M’s energy efficiency programs help reduce energy use and emissions that harm the environment. Energy-saving steps, both large and small, help to better our environment and the world we live in.

  • How much they help is up to you. The more people that participate in energy-saving programs, the more we help the environment and the more energy we save. You may be able to get a rebate too—our customers received almost $5 million dollars in rebates in 2020!
  • Since 2012, you have helped save over 4.7 billion kWh through I&M’s energy efficiency programs. That’s enough to power about 394,487 typical homes for an entire year!
  • You helped the environment by eliminating almost 329 million pounds of CO2 emissions since 2012. That’s like taking 32,442 cars off the road for a year.

Online Energy Checkup
Over 4.6 million kWh of energy was saved in 2020. The 16,989 customers and their families who installed the energy-saving items in the kit helped reducing emissions equal to taking 715 cars off the road for one year.

LED Bulbs
In 2020, you replaced 827,115 traditional light bulbs with LEDs. Over 17.5 million kWh of energy were saved—enough to light almost 1,4,60 homes for a year. The environment was helped by reducing emissions equal to taking 2,701 cars off the road for one year!

Income-qualified Home Energy Checkup / Weatherproofing
Over 1 million kWh of energy was saved by customers who had a Home Energy Checkup in 2020. That’s equal to reducing the emissions from a car driving 1,845,060 miles a year.

HVAC and Energy-saving Products
In 2020, you saved over 3 million kWh in energy—enough to power about 254 typical homes for an entire year! That’s equal to reducing the emissions from a car driving 5,421,851 miles a year.

New Home Construction
In 2020, 515 homes qualified for the rebates. Those homes will save over 1 million kWh hours of energy annually—enough to power about 86 typical homes for an entire year.

Going Green at Work

Prescriptive Rebates
In 2020, our business customers saved over 21 million kWh with Prescriptive projects. That’s equal to the emissions produced by over 197 tanker trucks of gasoline!

Over $1.14 million in rebates was paid to our Prescriptive business customers in 2020.

Custom Incentives
In 2020, our business customers saved over 20 million kWh with custom projects. That’s equal to the emissions reduced by taking 3,089 cars off the road for a year!

Our Custom business customers were paid over $1 million in rebates in 2020.

Small Business Direct Install (SBDI)
In 2020, our small business customers saved over 2.1 million kWh with energy-saving projects. That’s equal to the emissions reduced by taking almost 330 cars off the road for a year!

Over $218,500 in rebates was paid to our SBDI customers in 2020.

Data as of 2021. Prior year data updated annually in June. Rebates and participation in 2021, were impacted by COVID-related program changes. Annual energy savings based on 12,000 kWh use per year. Estimated emissions reduction calculations are made using Greenhouse Equivalencies Calculator and gross verified kWh savings by program in 2021.

The EPA calculates emissions based on U.S. national weighted average CO2 marginal emission rates to convert reductions of kilowatt-hours into avoided units of carbon dioxide emissions. Since I&M’s generation portfolio is more than 2/3 emissions-free, the kWh saved by efficiency improvements made in our service area equates to a smaller emissions reduction compared to a region where coal is primarily used. The comparisons shown are for program marketing only and not based on I&M’s specific generation mix.
