Together, We Make Saving Energy Our Business

AEP is at the forefront of the energy industry’s transformation. We’ve developed next-generation sustainability goals to guide us as we create a brighter energy future.

Some highlights of our clean energy strategy include:

  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050
  • Adding more than 8,600 megawatts of regulated wind and solar energy through 2030
  • Investing $2.3 billion in renewable energy resources through 2024
  • Continuing investment in a smarter, more modern power grid
  • Educating customers on how to optimize their energy efficiency
  • Advocating for and enabling wider usage of electric vehicles

I&M’s Commitment to Saving

Environmental responsibility is fundamentally important to Indiana Michigan Power. Here are a few ways we work hard to protect the environment while delivering safe, reliable service:

  • More than two-thirds of the energy I&M generates is from emission-free sources that include solar, wind, hydro and the Cook Nuclear Plant.
  • We own and operate four emission-free solar plants. A fifth plant now being built near South Bend will bring our solar generation up to 35 megawatts, enough energy to power 4,700 typical homes.
  • We purchase 450 megawatts of wind energy – enough to power more than 100,000 homes – from three Hoosier wind generation plants.
  • Our generation fleet also includes six hydroelectric sites along the St. Joseph River in Michiana which generates over 22.4 megawatts of hydro energy.
  • Our Cook Nuclear Plant generates enough emission-free energy to power more than 1.5 million homes.
  • We continue to add technology to reduce emissions at the Rockport Generation Plant, I&M’s lone coal-fueled plant.
  • Our vigorous energy efficiency programs help reduce customers’ energy use – thereby reducing demand for generation of electricity.

Balanced Energy Mix

Our capacity is more than 50% emission-free, and actual energy delivered in 2019 was more than two-thirds emission-free.

I&M’s Energy Efficiency Programs

I&M’s energy efficiency programs help reduce energy use and emissions that harm the environment. Energy-saving steps, both large and small, help to better our environment and the world we live in.

How much they help is up to you. The more people that participate in energy-saving programs, the more we help the environment and the more energy we save. You may be able to get a rebate too.

  • Our customers received over $7.7 million dollars in rebates in 2019!
  • Since 2012, you have helped save over 3.8 billion kWh through I&M’s energy efficiency programs. That’s enough to power about 321,131 typical homes for an entire year!
  • You helped the environment by eliminating over 315 million pounds of CO2 emissions since 2012. That’s like taking 30,921 cars off the road for a year.

Going Green at Home

Appliance Recycling
In 2019, you helped recycle 4,844 working fridges and freezers. This saved 4.7 million kWh of energy. That’s equal to the emissions from a car driving 434,305 miles a year.

Online Energy Checkup
Over 3.5 kWh of energy was saved in 2019. The 14,510 customers and their families who installed the energy-saving items in the kit helped reduce emissions equal to two tanker trucks worth of gasoline.

LED Bulbs
You replaced 902,769 traditional light bulbs with LEDs. Over 19 million kWh of energy were saved—enough to light almost 1,620 homes for a year. The environment was helped by reducing emissions equal to taking 156 cars off the road for one year!

Home Energy Checkup / Weatherproofing
Over 1.3 million kWh of energy was saved by customers who had a Home Energy Checkup in 2019. That’s equal to reducing the emissions from a car driving 121,677 miles a year.

Income-qualified Home Energy Checkup / Weatherproofing
Over 1.3 million kWh of energy was saved by customers who had a Home Energy Checkup in 2019. That’s equal to reducing the emissions from a car driving 121,677 miles a year.

HVAC and Energy-saving Products
In 2019, you saved almost 3.4 million kWh in energy—enough to power about 280 typical homes for an entire year! That’s equal to reducing the emissions from a car driving 310,051 miles a year.

Our customers received almost $520,000 in rebates.

New Home Construction
In 2019, 524 Indiana homes qualified for the rebates. Those homes will save over 1 million kWh hours of energy annually—enough to power about 100 typical homes for an entire year!

School Energy Education
In 2019, 429 classrooms learned about saving energy. Each of the 12,757 students received an energy saving kit to take home. Those 5th-grade students and their families helped save over 2 million kWh. That’s equal to reducing the emissions from a car driving 191,500 miles a year.

Going Green at Work

Prescriptive Rebates
In 2019, our business customers saved over 41 million kWh with prescriptive projects. That’s equal to the emissions produced by over 20 tanker trucks of gasoline!

Over $2 million in rebates was paid to our Prescriptive business customers in 2019.

Custom Incentives
In 2019, our business customers saved over 45 million kWh with custom projects. That’s equal to the emission reduced by taking 364 cars off the road for a year!

Our Custom business customers were paid over $2.5 million in rebates in 2019.

Small Business Direct Install (SBDI)
In 2019, our small business customers saved over 2.3 million kWh with energy-saving projects. That’s equal to the emissions reduced by taking almost 19 cars off the road for a year!

Over $235,000 in rebates was paid to our SBDI customers in 2019.

Tip of the Day

TIP #30
Insulation
If your home has no sidewall insulation, place heavy furniture like bookshelves, armoires and sofas along exterior walls, and use decorative quilts as wall hangings. This will help block cold air.

Data as of 2019. Prior year data updated annually in June. Annual energy savings based on 1,000 kWh use per month. Emissions based on I&M-specific emissions data from our cleaner generation portfolio. EPA.gov Greenhouse Equivalencies Calculator used for kWh conversion.

The EPA calculates emissions based on U.S. national weighted average CO2 marginal emission rates to convert reductions of kilowatt-hours into avoided units of carbon dioxide emissions. Since I&M’s generation portfolio is more than 2/3 emissions-free, the kWh saved by efficiency improvements made in our service area equates to a smaller emissions reduction compared to a region where coal is primarily used. This is great for the environment and our customers but makes the emission reduction comparisons, like cars off the road, smaller.
