Reduce Energy Use and Earn Bill Credits

IM Power Rewards: iControl pays you for reducing your energy use when energy demand is high. By reducing your energy use during these times, you can earn bill credits.

Shifting energy use away from high-demand periods allows I&M to rely on more renewable energy sources during peak times. This helps keep prices more affordable for you and your community, plus helps the environment by reducing our carbon footprint.

Get Bill Credits this Summer

When energy use is high, on really hot and humid days, I&M will hold a Peak Energy Use Event. When you reduce your energy use during the typical 2-3 hour event, well give you bill credits!

While we can’t guarantee savings, you could earn an average of $1 to $2 per event.* With up to 15 events per summer, the savings can add up!

After you sign up, we’ll send you a text prior to a Peak Energy Use Event. We’ll let you know when the event will start and stop, and provide easy energy-savings tips to lower your energy use. We will also post a “Peak Energy Use Event” alert on our websites.

Earn Bill Credits

If you reduce your energy use during the Peak Energy Use Event, you can earn an average of $1 to $2 per event.

How Bill Credits are Calculated

Your energy use “baseline” is calculated from your average use over the past 10 days for the same hours of the day as the Peak Energy Use Event. This excludes weekends, holidays and any other past event days. You can earn $1 for every kilowatt hour (kWh) you reduce below that baseline during the Peak Energy Use event.

Q:

What are the rules / qualifications?

A:

  • Must be an I&M residential customer in Michigan.
  • You must live on the property and be the account holder.
  • Must have a Smart Meter.
  • Must opt in to text alerts and have a valid email address on file.

How will I know that an event is in progress?

A:

We’ll send you a text prior to a Peak Energy Use Event to let you know when the event will start and stop. We will also post a “Peak Energy Use Event” Alert on our website.

When do events occur?

A:

Events typically occur on especially hot and humid days. They are held weekdays from May through September and typically last 2-3 hours, but will not last longer than 6 hours. There are a maximum of 15 events per summer.

What is the bill credit for participating in an event? When will I receive it?

A:

You can earn $1 for every kilowatt hour (kWh) you reduce below your baseline during the Peak Energy Use Event. While we can’t guarantee savings, you may earn an average of $1 to $2 per event.

How much you earn is determined by your participation effort. The more aggressive you are about lowering your energy use (turning off appliances, adjusting your thermostat, etc.), the more you will save.

Example: Baseline is 16 kWh. During the peak-time you reduce your energy to 12 kWh. Based on a $1 per kWh, you’d earn $4 for that single event.

*Baseline – Usage = Kilowatt hour savings
Bill Credit = $1.00 x kilowatt hours saved

An email will be sent within 10 days of the event with the credit amount for the event, plus your total credit for the year. Since this is a pilot program, the process to provide monthly bill credits is still in development. You will receive your total reward by year-end 2021.

What if I don’t participate in an event?

A:

Participating in an event is optional. You can always participate in the next event. Remember, you must participate to earn a bill credit.

How do I see how much my credit is after an event is over?

A:

An email will be sent within 10 days of the event with the credit amount for the event, plus the total for the year.

Q:

I tried to reduce my energy use but didn’t receive a credit? Why?

A:

Your energy use “baseline” is calculated from your average use over the past 10 days for the same hours of the day as the Peak Energy Use Event. This excludes weekends, holidays and any other past event days. To calculate your bill credit, we look at several factors, including how long you have been living at a location.

For example:

  • If you’ve been living at the same home for a while, we would look at three or more days over the past year that had hourly weather patterns like the Peak Energy Use Event. We would compare your usage during the event to your average usage during those three days.
  • If you’ve recently moved into a new home, we may use historical data to calculate your savings. We can look at the energy use of three homes in the I&M service area that are most like yours. Then we’d focus in on three or more days over the past year that had hourly weather patterns like the Peak Energy Use Event, and compare your usage during the event to the average usage of these homes on those days. Once you’ve lived in your home for more than a year, we can calculate your energy usage and savings based on your historical usage.

Q:

I wasn’t even home to use energy during the Peak Energy Use Event. Why didn’t I earn a bill credit?

A:

If you’re not normally home during that time of day, your typical energy use during that time may be low already. Your Peak Energy Use bill credit is based on whether you used less than you normally use during those hours of an unusually hot day. So even if you didn’t use much energy during the Peak Energy Use Event, if you didn’t use less than you normally use, you won’t earn a Peak Energy Use bill credit.

Some appliances and electronics use energy even when you aren’t there.

How can I see my energy use and compare it to other days?

A:

You can monitor what you are using — in near real-time with the I&M Mobile App or through your account on IndianaMichiganPower.com. You can see when you are using energy by the quarter-hour, hour, day, month or year. Your use is measured in both dollars and kWh, helping you set energy goals and budgets. It’s free, online and easy to use.

How do I know if I have a Smart Meter?

A:

Smart Meters (AMI) have a blue label while standard meters have a red label.

Can I enroll in multiple IM Power Rewards programs?

A:

Yes, many of our programs are compatible. However, you cannot participate in the following when enrolled in IMPower Rewards: iControl.

  • IM Power Rewards: Smart Thermostats (formerly IM Home)
  • Critical Peak Pricing
  • Time of Day 2

Q:

Since this is a pilot, will there be a survey?

A:

After the IM Power Rewards: iControl pilot is complete, an I&M vendor (ADM Associates) may call or email to ask your opinion about the pilot and verifying your energy savings.

How do I unenroll from IM Power Rewards: iControl?

A:

There is no penalty for not participating in events. You must remain in the program until October 2022. If you want to unenroll at that time, send an email requesting to end your participation in the IM Power Rewards: iControl. Once you unenroll, you will not receive bill credits.
