What are the rules / qualifications?

  • Must be an I&M residential customer living in a single-family or duplex home.
  • Must have electric heat.
  • Limit of one Home Energy Checkup every three years, per address.

Will you do a Home Energy Checkup for a mobile home or renter?

Mobile homes do not qualify. If you rent, checkups can be done with landlord approval. Please have them sign the Rental Property Service Agreement.

Do I need to be home for the Home Energy Checkup? How long does it take?

Yes. An adult 18 years or older must be present during the entire Home Energy Checkup.

It will take 2-4 hours for our energy expert to check your home, perform the tests and install LED bulbs, pipe wrap and other energy-saving products.

What do I need to do before the checkup?

The energy expert will need access to every room in your house including the attic, basement and crawlspace. Please confine your pets to a secure area. It would be helpful to make a list of any known problems like drafty or uncomfortable rooms.

What does BPI certified mean?

Our energy experts are not contractors. They are employees of Indiana Michigan Power and are certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI). BPI is the leader in setting technical standards for home energy auditing and energy-efficient upgrades.

What is a blower door test?

Our energy experts use a blower door test to locate air leaks in your home. During a blower door test, a powerful fan is mounted onto the frame of an exterior door. The fan pulls air out of the house, lowering the air pressure inside. Outside air then flows in through all cracks and openings. This exaggerates the leaks in your home so they can be identified and measured. This test recreates the conditions a house experiences during 20 mph wind gusts.

The Energy Saver 101 infographic on explains the importance of a blower door test during your Home Energy Checkup.

What is a thermographic or infrared inspection?

Thermography measures the surface temperature by using infrared video and still cameras. These tools see light that’s in the heat spectrum. Images on the video or film record the temperature variations of the home ranging from red for hot regions to black for cooler areas. These images help the energy expert determine where your home is losing energy.

The Energy Saver 101 infographic on  explains how infrared imaging works.

Is additional financial assistance available for low-income customers?

Yes. I&M offers an Income-Qualified Weatherproofing program. Homeowners must meet federal income guidelines published by the US Department of Energy and Weatherization Program.

Why is there a co-pay for the Home Energy Checkup?

Between the energy-saving items that may be installed during the checkup and the expert advice you’ll receive, each Home Energy Checkup is valued at over $430. I&M will mail an invoice that can be paid by credit card or check. Payment is required within 30 days upon receipt of the invoice, which includes instructions. The co-pay is not added to your electric bill.

Will the co-pay be refunded if I make the weatherproofing upgrades?

If you complete the recommended weatherproofing upgrades, I&M will pay 50% of the weatherproofing upgrades cost. The co-pay will be deducted from your portion of the expense. A comprehensive report with detailed information including the cost of the recommended upgrades will be given to you before our energy expert leaves your home. The co-pay will not be refunded if the upgrades aren’t made.

What kind of weatherproofing upgrades qualify for a refunded co-pay?

Weatherproofing upgrades can include a combination of insulation, air sealing and duct sealing. A comprehensive report with detailed information including the cost of the recommended weatherproofing upgrades is given to you before our energy expert leaves your home.
